Do you enjoy the carnival season? Then why not celebrate again in March! In Greece, including Crete, the end of carnival and the beginning of Lent is usually celebrated later than in the Christian north. This year, the carnival weekend fell on 16-18 March and we went to Sitia in the east of the island of Crete to see a fiery, historical spectacle, the fun carnival parade and a lively and atmospheric concert. The atmosphere was great and the Raki delicious! At the start of Lent, on Shrove Monday, we went to Tourloti not far from Sitia and enjoyed a Lenten feast accompanied by traditional dancing with the villagers and friends. Everyone brought something to feast on to give us inspiration for what to eat over the next 40 days. During the day, we spent our time hiking in the Sitia area and at Tourloti with its marvellous view towards Mochlos. Not only were we able to admire the lush green mountain landscapes, scent the countless orchids and other flowers and enjoy the views down to the coast, but we were also able to admire some historic buildings and old chapels at our leisure and pay a visit to the friendly locals in the remote villages. After three packed and wonderful days, we had a heavy head and heavy legs. A good time for a massage and relaxing music! March on Crete has so much to offer!
Everything is in bloom, the air is fresh, the beaches are empty and there's always a reason to party! Feel very welcome!
